GENERAL ITEMS. (Pt-r Pjvss Association. —Qoptjritjht.) Sydney, May 29. Campbell an important witness for the Crown in the Butler case, has been burned to death in a hut at Lithgow. Good rains are falling in the coastal district. They are lighter, but increasing in the interior. Adelaide, May 29. News has been received that Dr. Elliott ,the well-known Adelaide medico, was killed in West Africa. A party of nine Europeans, with 200 native carriers, were exploring the vicinity of the Givato river, and were surrounded by the hostile natives. Dr. Elliott was dead, and only two of the Europeans escaped. Brisbane, This day. Sir Julian Salamons, Q.C., has returned, after a lengthy trip to Europe. He is gratified at the progress of the Federal movement in his absence, but considers that the Convention was prematurely forcing matters. Heavy rains in the north-eastern district have broken up the drought. When parliament meets the Enabling Bill for the appointment of Federal delegates will be submitted. If passed it will provide for laying the Commonwealth Bill on the table in the same manner as the southern Parliament. It is probable that if the bill is adopted Parliament will be adjourned to enable the delegates to attend the September Convention.
