LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Volunteers assembled in St Matthew's Hall last evening for company drill. Lieutenant Ware was in command and the company acquitted itself very creditably. The fire bell rang at ten minutes past five yesterday evening, and the chimney of Mr White's boarding house was discovered on fire, but it was extinguished without the assistance of the brigade. " The Heretaunga School reopens after the mid-winter holidays on Wednesday at 10 a.m., instead of Tuesday, as owing to the Queen's Birthday falling on Monday, the boys will be unable to get back in time. Owing to the Awatoto coursing ground being spoiled by the floods, a meeting has been arranged to be held at Waipawa on the 25th May. With a splendid natural ground in the vicinity of Hastings it is a wonder nothing has been done to establish the sports here. However a movement is now afoot and we will probably have a Plumpton era long. The Cabinet has decided that the Government Buildings should be closed for three days during the record reign celebrations—June 21st, 22nd and 23rd. The intention of the municipal authorities in the four centres is to be ascertained before the question of illuminating the public buildings is decided. The natives of the Wanganui district, says the Chronicle, are now moving in the direction of placing most of their remaining blocks under the co-operation clause of the Native Land Court Act. It is estimated that something like half a million acres will be treated under the clause next year. The Maoris of Porirua during the last week have been holding a tangi over a deceased chief, Ohepa Horomona, who was greatly respected by the Maoris as well as Pakahas. Natives came from all parts to pay the last respects. At the funeral of the chief on Sunday, the Maori Brass Band played the Dead March on the way to the burying ground.—Post. As Messrs Hayes, Green and Cullen, were returning from Mr Jackson's sale this afternoon Mr Hayes narrowly escaped a serious accident. He was leading a horse which he had bought, when the amnial stopped suddenly pulling Mr Hayes completely out of the trap on to the road. Fortunately beyond a shock no serious results ensued. A reward is offered for a lost sheep dog. A lost pearl and gold brooch is advertised for. A spring-cart, harness, garden tools erc. f will be sold without reserve by G. H. Vickers and Co to-morrow. On the Queen's Birthday the Hastings Rifles compete for the company's champion belt at the Te Mata Range. A firm in Wellington claims to have sold 400 bicycles since the beginning of the year. The Times reports that the building trade of Newtown in exceedingly brisk at the present time. The Carterton bicylest Ailck Lindop, has been lying unconscious for the past eight days. Faint hopes are entertained of his recovery. The Wanganue papers are complaining of th a number of " speelers " at present in the district awaitiug the races. The police a.ie said to be kept very busy. Mr D. D. Hyde, who lias carried on business as hairdresser and tobaccanist on Lambton-quay, Wellington, for many years, has sold out to Mr A. Berman, formerly of Dunedin.
