GENERAL ITEMS. ('Per Tress Association. — Copyriyht) Sydney, May 20. Steady rain has fallen during the greater part of the day and continues to-night. It is, however, confined to the coast and high lands. A bitterly cold wind is blowing, and heavy snow has fallen on the mountains. There is a rough sea on the coast. This day. Mr Wragge gives no present hope of the break-up of the drought in the interior. He says the outlook is more gloomy than ever. A report of the Inspector-General on the insane shows that since 1891 the proportion of insane had increased from 269 to 296 per thousand. He attributes this to the commercial depression, and complains of a large increasing number of alien patients over-crowding the asylums. Melbourne, This day. The Humane Society has awarded silver medals to 38 rescuers of the Stockton colliery disaster, New South Wales. Brisbane, May 20. Drought and cold weather is having a serious effect on the sugar crop. The Sugar Journal estimates that the colony's yeild will not exceed 8000 tons. Perth, This day. The complete returns for the general election gives : Ministerial, 29 ; Opposition, 28; Independent, 7.
