FIX ANCI AL STATE ME NT. A HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL BALANCE-SHEET. AN ATTEMPT TO DEFEAT THE LAND TAX. (IVr P>v>.y.s- k.sHoricdion.— Sydney, This day. Mr Re id promised a deputation of unemployed that the Government would do everything possible to relieve distress. Among other public works, it was proposed to expend £'loo.ooo on regradmg the railways. The finances was splendidly strong, nnd he could got a million if he wanted, but he was not going to expend money on useless works. The interim financial statement .shows that the Treasurer expects the revenue to excee d the csiimate by €IO,OOO and to be able to carry forward to credit a balance of £IOI,OOO for the year ending 80th June. Mr iieid bitterly condemned the efforts that were made by a section of the better class of the community to defraud the Treasury in connection with the payment of the land tax, and Wished the Commissioners could let the House know the systematic efforts that were being made to defraud the Treasury. He was ashamed to say that some of the worst offenders were amongst the shining lights of the community. With all these disadvantages the tax for IK9O would yield £270.000. The railway revenue had increased by £l->O,OOO as compared with the preceding year.
