Captain Russell sustained a heavy loss by tlie floods in the drowning of the brood mare Leonora (Leolinus —Gossip) and the two-year-old Ileal Princess. The former was an especial favorite of the Squire of Flaxinere, and he feels her loss very much. She was a noted performer in the eighties, having won many notable events in Hawltes Bay, Taranaki, Canterbury and elsewhere. She will be remembered as running second in the New Zealand Cup in Vanguard's year. The horses were running in a paddock where it was thought the Hoods could not possibly reach them. At the Sydney races on Saturday the Doncaster Handicap was won by the outsider Superb; Cremorne and Adoration ran a dead heat for second. Newhaven won the St Leger, Charge second and The Officer third. Hopscotch, Battalion, Coil, were the placed horses in the Autumn Stakes. At yesterday's races the Champagne was won by Aurum. Sydney Cup —Tricolor 1, Kallatina 2, Lochleigh 8. Ten started. La Carabine won the Nursery. Van Buren died last week down South. He was by Vanguard from Wild Rose. Newhaven is to be shipped to England in about a week's time. Banner has been sold for £2B. Leonora, owned by Captain Russell, and Spearfeldt, Kopeki, Torpedo Christina filly, and two Torpedo yearlings were drowned in Friday's Hood. Goodman, the Dunedin trainer, has purchased Euroclydon. The Israelite won a pony race at Auckland on Saturday.
