TO-DAY'S TELEGRAMS.
[By Telegraph.] [Special to Standard.] Reefton, This day. A man named George Harman arrived by the train last night and committed suicide this morning by chopping his right hand off with an axe. Palmerston North, This day. This morning a seven-roomed house on the Rangitikei line, four miles from Palmerston, was burned down. It was owned by J. W. Johnston, and occupied by F. J. Hill. Nothing was saved. It was insured in the New Zealand office —the house for £2OO, and the furniture £165. The cause is supposed to be a defective chimney. Wellington, This Day. - The ballot by the labor and other organisations for a candidate to represent the labor interest at the general election resulted as follows: —J. Hutchison, 448; D. P. Fisher, 202; W. Worth, 115. Dunedin, This day. John Walker, licensee of the Red Lion Hotel, was fined £1 and costs for supplying a prohibited person. The woman supplied was charged with obtaining liquor, and appeared in Court drunk and was locked up. The mining boom has evidently reached Dunedin. Forty-two applicants have been deposited, to be heard at the next Warden's Court, the largest number for years.
