RACING ITEMS. [By Gipsy Grand.] Blue Fire lias been entered for the Seventh Challenge Stakes. St Paul has been scratched for all engagements. Nautilus has foaled a full-sister to Cynisca. Mr Quinlivan's gelding by Crawford Priory from Good Fruit has been named Douglas in compliment to Mr Douglas McLean, and not the master of Te Mahanga as is generally supposed. Mr P. Butler intends retiring from racing. Poor old " Patsy " has had his tips and downs on the turf—probably more of the latter than the former. In his time he has played many parts and many good liorses—notably : Manton, Crown Jewel, Cracksliot, 1 iberator, Au Revoir—passed through his hands. Sabreur was backed at Dunedin last week for the N.Z. Cup at 400 to 9. Mr Connop's Cuirassier Tasmania gelding has been named Hobart. The StClair—Lady Gertrude colt is yet unnamed. As a suitable name I should suggest the word " Boreas " —indicating the god of wind. The name would be appropriate to his half-brother, Euroclydon, which means a tempestuous wind. It would also be in keeping with the name of Tempest and Blizzard who claim relationship to the colt in question. Another appropriate name would be " Cyclone " or "Whirlwind." "Tornado" would also be a good name. Last week's_ Referee contains a list of horses in training in most of the racing centres in the colony. In the Hastings list a few mistakes are perceptable. Hiko is credited as the sire of Primula in Maher's stables. Primula is by Torpedo. Waingongora in Munn's stable is set down as Torpedo—Rivulet, instead of Torpedo— Cascade. Lady Ellen, in Connop's stable is made to read as a 3vr-old; instead of S 2 years. The list is a very long and interesting one and in matters involving the age and breeding of horses, errors are inevitable.
The following acceptances have been received for the Titnaru Cup :—Prime Warden, Hippomenese, Quiltiri, Casket, Chaos, Maxiinus, Caiiuonshot, Captive, Lady Somnus, Vandyke, Esau, Platter.
