The Pomahaka Murder.

Matson, charged with the Pomahaka murder, is a Fin. The girl Clark is half Swedish by blood, and can talk the language, but she and the man used to converse in English. Several of the witnesses in the case are settlers on the property recently acquired by the Government at Pomahaka, and they have the appearance of not being hard up. Matson has been a hardworking man, doing as much as was possible with one pair of hands to improve the land betu een his intervals of rabbiting. He had to follow the latter occupation so as to raise money wherewith to live. He is a short, thick set man, perhaps nearly 50 years of age, In the early stages of the enquiry at Lawrence he wore an unconcerned air, and it cannot be said that at any part of the investigations he exhibited great anxiety, though at odd times he was visibly affected.
