A DROWNING ACCIDENT. DEAD. Special to Standard. I Wellington, this day. There will be 16 cases at the criminal settings next week. Kirby's case is among the number. A sad accident happened last night to two young permanent artillery men .returning to Fort Ballance in an open boat, when the tiller handle unshipped. One of the men named Smith stood up in the boat and a heavy sea running at the time upset the boat. Hickey, the other man, stuck to the boat but Smith began swimming towards a coal hulk. Hickey's cries were heard on the s.s. Waikato lying in the harbor, from which a boat was lowered and Hickey was picked up almost dead. Simith was nowhere to be seen and his body is being searched for. An old messenger at the Parliament Buildidgs named Applin was found dead in bed this morning. He was 74 years of age.
