GENERAL ITEMS. A:v;u.vm>. July 20. At the inquest on John Cromwell, who committed suicide by using dynamite, a verdict of temporary insanity was returned. The evidence disclosed no motive'for the act. Herbert, a resident of Howick, was found dead on the highway. It is supposed he died from heart disease. The mast and sail of a small boatlias been found on a sandspit at Maraetao. It is supposed the boat capsized, but none as yet are reported as missing. The local branch of the Irish Federation League has sent home .£27 to Mr John Dillon for the Irish Parliamentary 1 u; d. A meeting of the Prohibition Loo true was held to-night in the I oi. t' l- II i'l. tlure being a large attendance. Mr W. J. \\ illiams. President, presided. The object of the mectme was to consider the illegal traffic m liquor with natives in the King Country. The itev. Yv". Gittos, superintendent of the Wesloyan Maori mission moved, and the Rev. George Burgess seconded, th<- following n solution, which was carried unanimously : —"That this me-ting of Auckland citizens deeply regrets to hear of the shameful manner in which the law prohibiting the liquor traffic in the King Country is being' violated, and respectfully requests the Government to take more vigorous measures to enforce the law and bring into operation clause 88 of the amended Licensing Act, which would effectually preserve the natives from being destroyed by the traffic in strong drink." Sir Robert Stout also addressed the meeting on the same subject. Wanoanxi, July 20. At the District Court to-day, before Judge J. C. Martin, two youths, J. Taylor and Norman Hamlin, pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods. Taylor's sentence was postponed until another chargi i_ r >r. him in the Supreme Court at New Plymouth has been decided. breOerick Clifford, for a grossly indecent act, was sentenced to 18 months' hard labor. Isabella Davidson, a young girl, pleaded guilty to the theft of a number of articles of clothing, and her sister, Ada Davidson, pleaded not guilty. In the latter case the jury did not agree, and have been locked up for the night. Wellington*, July 20. A letter has been received from Messrs Rodgers and Gallet, perfumers, of Paris, stating that the substance found on the Taranaki beach some time ago by Messrs C. Beckett and Ainslevj and sent to Franee is ambergris. "Mr Beckett states that the weight was about 481b, and he estimates the value to be at least £3,000. The Timber Conference to-day discussed the reports of committees. The forestry committee reported that a close season for cutting timber was impracticable and a system of ringing trees would be costly and injurious. The export committee's report laid special stress on the necessity of seasoning timber before sale. Both were adopted. Dunedin, July 20. At a meeting of shareholders in the Transvaal special claim, Reef ton, it was decided to place the property under offer to Mr Mills, at present in London. The terms are that the present shareholders receive £ISOO cash and a considerable number of paid-up shares in the new company- The option if for four months. At the annual meeting of the Dimedin Gold Dredging Company the report stated that the river had kept high during the year, interfering with operations. Gold to the value of £2961 had been got, of which £435 had been paid in dividends, and £1062 as wages, Thirteen entries (one more than last year) have been received for the sixth annual brass band contest, to be held in Dunedin in October next. The following bands have sent in their names :—Wellington Garrison, Christchurch Garrison, Stanmore (Christchurch), Oam&ru Garrison, Invercargill Garrison, Timaru Garrison, Waimatc, Invercargill X'ity, Dunedin N avals, Kaikoira, Dunedin Engineer*, Dunedin Citizens, and Dunedin Garrison. For the solo contests there are oreK 70 entries.
