♦ GENERAL ITEMS. Arek land, July 4. To-day the Doc- of Hope, a newlyacquired night- shelter for homeless and fallen women in Free-man's Bay, was formally opened by the Mayoress. News has been received from the Islands by the Taupo that great excitement was occasioned on the 10th ultimo by the disturbing of the waters round the islands. The sea receded till coral reefs were exposed, which had not been seen before by the oldest natives, and came bnck fully ten feet. Large numbers of fish were thrown ashore. Weij.ixgtox, July 4. P. 8. Cassidy (manager) and Ashbolt (printer) of the New Zealand Times were to-day committed for trial for criminal libel on account of an article last month accusing Kirby of being allied with gamblers in this town. The Government has taken a new departure by appointing what are to be known as military cadets. Three young men have been stationed at the forts in Wellington for training, and have received a promise that if they succeed in passing the necessary examination they will be gazetted junior officers in the Permanent Artillery. Another one is to be taken on probation at an early date. It is proposed if the cadets are found to be efficient to station one at each of the four principal ports. Mr Ziman has given £SOO to the Reefton Hospital, £250 to the Benevolent Society, and £2-50 to the Reefton Library. The first two carry a Government subsidy, and will be increased to £llOO and £550 respectively. July 6. The Magistrate's Court has cut up the £4OO now lying in the bank to the credit of the Coromandel, barque, amongst the suitors as follows : £OO to the Union Company for towage, £IOO to the United Insurance Coy. for supplying necesaries, and £2OO for salvage and wages to crew. Poor Jack as usual comes in at the heel of the hunt. The girls who were found to have been inmates of Chinese dens have been let off easily by Mr Martin, who warned them that this was their last chance. C'HRISTCHI'RCH, J Illy 5. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Association the balance-sheet, showing the sum of £14,347 to be dealt _ with in dividends, bonus on commission, purchases of merchandise and wages, was adopted. The chairman reported that during the year there had been an increase of business in all the branches that had been profitably and successfolly conducted. Timajsc, July 4. ' The body of a man, name unknown, found in an old hut at I pper Pareora on Thursday, was brought to_ town to-day by the police. The body is that of an elderly man, apparently a sailor from the clothing, and is almost a skeleton. It must have been there for some months. There is no clue as to its identity. IxVERC.VRGILL, Julie 4. The Gore schoolhouse was burned down this morning. It was valued at £7OO, and uninsured. The origin is unknown. The railways in several places are under water, and communication on all the lines except the Bluff is interrupted. The rivers are falling rapidly, but there is little information from the country as to damage. It is expected that several bridges have been disorganised and approaches washed out. No mails came through from the North yesterday. Abont 100 shareholders in the J. G. Ward Association held a meeting yesterday which was postponed on account of the floods preventing the the farmers getting in town. There was some feeling displayed about the admission of reporters, and it was decided by a large majority that they be excluded.
