CUTTING THE PAINTER.
[To the Editor.] Sie,—With reference to a statement in the letter of " Pro Bono Publico" in your issue of last evening re preference being given by the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club to the Napier Band, it might interest some of your readers to know that although the local band offered to play at a fee of some £i per day lower than the Napier Band the committee would not accept their services. On more than one occasion an application from the local band has been met with the answer " The time has not yet arrived for the consideration of your proposal." If there was any fault to be found with the Hastings Band there would be an excuse for an unfavorable supply, but I maintain that the local players would give every bit as much satisfaction to those attending the races as the Napier band could. It is not a question of fairness, but favoritism.—l am. &c., Music. Hastings, June 20th, 1896.
