With no wickets clown for 80 runs, the Australians made a prolonged stand, being at the wickets all day, and, with two exceptions, all reached double figures. Donnon played a cautious game for 87, and Gregory rattled up 61 in quick time. Hill played steadily for his runs, but the others hit out freely. The innings closed for 378 runs. Sewell made an excellent stand for 37, and W. G. Grace played a splendid innings for 66. Trumble was mainly responsible for the defeat of the Home team, securing six wickets for 81 runs.
