An old decrepit looking man was seen approaching, and suspicion being aroused lie was pounced upon, when it was discovered that he was the missing man Kirhy.
The deformed linger left no doubt as to the old man being the missing man. lie acknowledges that, with the aid of a high official, he boarded the Talnne at Wellington inside a case. The ca-e was bolted on the inside, and he was enabled to release himself as soon as the steamer left. lie secreted himself, and from his hiding-place was enabled to see the movements of the police who were on the steamer. lie managed to get ashore safely in Sydney, it is thought, through the Tarawera being alongside the Talnne. He had taken out a ticket by the Tarawera for Auckland in a fictitious name. The arrest was effected by Sergeant 11 iggins and Constables Carson and Allison. Kirby, when arrc-ted, said that if lie was in tlie laud some one very high up in New Zealand was in the mire too. .The Wellington police authorities knew on Sunday that Kirby had escaped by means of the packing case, and that night by courtesy of the Telegraph officials a ine-'sage was sent to the Sydney police, giving the results of local enquiries. There is great excitement in Wellington over the arrest, and startling revelation 1 ; ore expected.
