Auckland, May 12. A ten-roomed dwelling in Wellesleystreet West, occupied by Mrs Quinn, was destroyed by fire this morning. It was bought last week by the Helping Hand Mission for a rescue home. The furniture was insured for £li>o in the Commercial Union. A dwelling-house at Penrose, the property of G. 11. Siddle, was destroyed by fire. Part of the furniture was saved by some railway platelayers. The building was insured for £2OO, and the; furniture for £2OO in the North German olliee. At the annual meeting of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind the report stated the proceeds of the late bazaar were £-117, and the credit balance at the end of the financial year £735. Wanoani-i, May 12. Duncan B. Howard was convicted on two charges of sly-grog selling at Kerioi. Inland Wanganni, on February 10th. On the first charge he was fined £25, and sentenced to three months' imprisonment on the second. Judge Kettle remarked, in conclusion, that he was determined to put down the traffic. The picture had been under exposed. The report of the committee on fisheries was submitted, and a committee was appointed to cooperate with the council of the Acclimatisation Society and the local members of both Houses in securing the establishment of a marine fish hatchery at Purakanui.
