The Mayoral Election.
A considerable number of years have elapsed since such interest was taken in tne election of a mayor as was evince I yesterday. Both candidates—Messrs Tucker and DeLautour—being good mm who have been of some service to the ratepayers in the past, it was only natural that the partisans of each should strain every nerve to secure the return of their respective choice. Ths fact that the election was also for a seat at the Harbour Board, no doubt, greatly stimulated the interest taken. Early in the day the supporters of the aspirants were busily engaged in catching those voters who had determined to spend the holiday in a fitting manner. All day traps were running to and fro taking the ratepayers to the poll. Up to the hour of closing the booth it appeared as if but a few votes would separata the candidates, and both sides seemed confident of success. Shortly after half past six the Returning Officer declared the result as follows ;— W. H. Tucker .. .. ~ 151 0. A. DeLautour ~ .. 94 Informal 1
Captain Tucker then thanked those who had voted for him, especially the ladies, and still further those who had worked for himHis success over Mr DeLautour he believed was to be attributed to the party who had worked so hard for him, as against those who had worked for Mr DeLautour. His (Oapt. Tucker’s) success showed that his parly was the strongest. Mr DeLautbnr also returned thanks, and, in doing so; said he was very glad Gisborne had got such a good Mayor as Captain Tucker. If he had known at first that Cap. fain Tucker was going to put up ha (Mr DeLautour) would not have stood, but having once consenled to come forward he could not possibly retire.
