Mr W. S. Greene had a narrow escape from an accident yesterday afternoon. Ho was mounting his horse and the saddle slipped round, Mr Gra’i-e fa’ling rather heavily to the ground. He was uninjured. A sailor has been arrested at Cardiff on a charge of having murdered two women in South Germany eight y-ars ago. The prisoner was arrested on tho information of the German Consul at Cardiff, acting on intelligence received from the German Consul at West Hartlepool.
We have had occasion eo often to adverse’y criticise the manner in which the business of the Borough Council has been conducted that it is with pleasure we can refer to the way the work was got through on Tuesday night. In a little more than half an hour the proceedings were concluded, as much being done as has on some occasions taken two hours.
At the Borough Council meeting on Tues day evening Mr Bourke spnlied for three week’s leave of absence, stating that he hid made arrangements so that Mr Warren should fulfil the duties in his a'lseme. A very successful meeting of the Matawhero Blue Ribbuu Society was held on Tuesday evening, the Society being at last favored with a beautiful night. The Bev. J. MoAra occupied ihe chair, and the following ladies and gentlemen contributed to the entertainment :—Misses Evinson, Nellie Steele, M'Farlane, and Longley, and Messrs 0. McFarlane and Slack.

A report was circulated in town yesterday to the effect that on Saturday Captain Holda, way, late of the Gisborne branch of the Salvation Army, had been arrested and had received six weeks' imprisonment for obstructing the footpath in Napier. From all we can learn the report is without foundation, and is the concoction of some mischievous individual whose tongue accomplishes double the work of his Dram.
