HOSPITAL SPORTS.
ANNUAL fete. The weather yiseterday for th® Hospital Sports Was all that could be desired, the sun being tempered by a nice breeze. There wee a Very good attenddnec on the ground. The Comitiitieb are to be congratulated on the excellent arrangements made fox the comfort of the public. The correct judgment of the handicapper, Mr Primrose, had the effect of caurinct close finishes. The course was good, as was the starting, and in fact all concerned performed the duties ss to call for special reinailt. Messrs Lucas, Uroft and Watson beted as judges, and Captain Winter us starter. Mr bkeet also worked hard, as did the Secretaries and other Committeemen. The following are the results of the various events
1. MAIDEN RACE—2OO yards. Entrance, 2s Bd. Ist Prize, Pair oi Vases, presented hy J. Townley ; 2nd Prize, Pair of Running Shoes, presented by J. Morrell; 3rd Prize, Jjdoz. Cups, Saucers, and Plates, presented by J. East; Wildish .. .. .. X Nesbitt 2 Briokhill ~ .. 8 Wildish got the best start, and maintained the lead, winning easily Nesbitt came in an easy second. Only three started, 2. BOYS' HANDloAP(underl(i)-isd yards. Entrance Is. Ist Prize, Youth’s Trousers, presented by W. Searle; 2nd Prize, Pair . of Boots, presented by Mr Hennessy : 3rd Prize, Sat of Garden Tools, presented by A. Parnell A Oo; A. Thompson, scratch ~ 1 P, Reid, 4 yards ~ ~ 2 H. Burns, 4 yards ~ ~ 3 The boys got away to a good start, but after a short distance had been traversed Borns fell, colliding with Lysnar, and also knocking O'Meara nut of it. Reid had the lead until within a olosa distance of the post when Thompson passed him, and Burns and Lysnar, who had picked up again, made the leaders travel all they knew to retain their positions. 3. HOP, STEP, AND JUMP—Entrance, 2s fld. Ist Prize, Pair of Trousers to measure, presented by R, Johnston & Co.; 2nd Prize, Hat, value 10s 6d, presented by Clothing Factory. There were six entries: Nesbitt, A. J. Cameron, Albert, Loom, Fagan, Ryan. The winner was:—

Ist Prize, £2 and the “ Standard ” for 12 months; 2nd Prize, Whip, presented by Adeane & Primrose, and Spurs, by I. 0. Taylor. J. Ryan, 5 yards . > >. 1 G. Wildish, 3 yards .. .. 2 T. Hackett, 7 yards .. .. 3 There was a good start, Hackett keeping the lead until round the bend, where Ryan drew on him and shot in front. Wildish came up fast, and near the post passed Hackett, but though ha put On a good spurt he could not succeed in overtaking Ryan who won a splendidly contested race by a yard and a half. Ross, Lewis, and Nesbitt also ran.
fl, BUYS' CANOE RACE—Entrance, la. Ist Prize, Waterbury Watch, presented by F. Jones ; ’nd Prize, Christmas Cake, presented by J. Erskine. A. Thompson .. .. 1 F. O’Jleara .. .. .. 2 From an uneven start a splendid race ensued. Shortly after starting the two smaller boys, Graham and Miller, ran foul of each other, and were of course out of it. O’Meara and Thompson kept together until nearing the post whan the tossle got very exciting. Thompson had a couple of feet the best of it, but O'Meara clung to him, and at the post Thompson had barely a couple of inches to spare.
6. 150 YAIiDS' HA.NbIC.AP (for members of Amateur Athletic Chib)—Entrance. 2s 61. Ist Prize, Trophy (Bronze Drinking Cup), presented by S. McLernon; 2nd Prize, Meerschaum Pips, presented by W. Miller; 3rd Prize, Inkstand, presented by W. Fraser. Booth, 4 yards ~ ~ .. X Rees, 4i yards ~ ~ ~ 2 . Ackroyd, I? yards ..3
Ackroyd held the lead half the distance and made the paca warm for the more youthful competitors, but Booth forged ahead, and Rees beat Ackroyd on the tape for second place. Rogers also ran. 7. BOYS' HANDICAP(undcrI2) -lOOyards. Entrance, Is. Ist Prize, Suit Boy's Clothes, presented by J. Longley ; 2nd Prize, Boy's Tweed Pants, presented by Teat & Fnar; 3rd Prize, 2 Oleographs, presented by J. Whintay, Gregg, 8 yards ~ 1 Jobson, 4 yards ~ ~ .. 9 Petersen, scratch ~ „ ..8
There were eight entries, and the race was a good one, 8. RUNNING HIGH JUMP—Entrance, 2’ 61. Ist Prize. Box Tea, presented by GMatthewson ; 2nd Prize, Calf, presented by J. Coleman. There were only two entries, Cameron and Parsons, the former winning easily, 9. HANDICAP WALKING MATCH-One Mile. Entrance, 3s. Ist Prize, £2 10s, and llorse Shod for six months. G. Humphries; 2nd Prize, Pair of E.B. Boots, presented by A. J. Cooper, and Hat by H. Lewis; 3rd Prize, Bridle, presented by S. Stevenson. Hooper, ear. .1 O. McFarlane, 13 yards.. .. 2 Leighton, 25 yards .. .. 3
Mi-Kenny (scr) Nesbitt (18), Williams (25), and Brickhill (35) also started. First time past the post Hooper passed McKenny and the latter caught Nesbitt. Hooper walked f ist. and on the round they were Williams. McFarlane, Hooper, Leighton. On the threequarter Hooper caught McFarlane and gained quickly on the first man. Williams held the lead for some time, but before the fourth round Hooper forged ahead. Brickhill came up well but did not last, and Nesbitt and McKenny retired. At the fifth round McFarlane Came close on the leader, but failed to catch him, and on coming into the post the race stood—Hooper ten yards ahead of McFarlane, and Leighton a bad third. The time was Smin 30sec.
10. St. ANDREW’S HANDICAP—44O yards. Entrance. 7s 6d. Ist Prize, £5; 2ud Prize, £2 ; 3rd Prize, Meerschaum Pipe, presented by 0. C. Lucas. Boland, X 6 yards I Cameron, scratch .. .. 2 Hackett, 20 yards .. .. 3
McFarlane (8), Ross (10), Lewis (18). and Witty (35) also ran. There wae a fair start. Witty kept the lead for some distance and ran well. At halt way Hackett and Lewis were together, Ross dropping out of it. Camercn made the pace warm and gained fast on the leaders. In the straight run Boland beat Hackett, and Cameron got second by a good spurt. Time, 58secs. •
11. GIRLS’ RACE (under 16)—100 yards. Entrance, Is. Ist t'rize, Lady's Costume, presented by Miss Doran, and Work Bisket.by Mrs Risie; 2nd Prize, Silk Umbrella, presemed by G R. Moore; 3rd Prize, Book, “ A World of Girls,” presented bv T. Adams. Lily Stevenson i Emma Wade .. ~2 Edith Whinray 3 Capital race, much interest being taken in theevent.
12. HALF-MILE HANDICAP (Amateur Athletic Club)—Entrance 2s Od. let Prize, Trophy presented by Mr T> Ji Dickson; 2nd Prize, One pair French Vases, presented by Boylan & Cd. Brown, scratch ;; .11 Booth; scratch , ~, ■, jj Lysnar, 25 yards .. ~ .. 8 Brown got the best of Booth at the etart and made the running, On tha Maond round Lysnar was ahead. Brown having fifteen yards the best of Booth, Lysnar wm thee passel, but Brown had it pretty well hie own way, winning by ten yarde. Lysnar made a flue spurt at the finish, coming In a good third* 18. PUTTING TUB STONIB (iidlbsj-L. trance, 2s. Ist Prize, Half ton of Coal, presented by H. B. Jonhston, end e Cake, by Oatridge & Veale; 2nd Prize, Box Cigars, presented by Dunlop A Bourke. This event wm won by Curtain, 14. HANDICAP HUBDLE RACE-IM y<h, 10 flights, of Bft 6>n. Entrance) fls 6di Ist prize, Special Prize, presented by J; B. Scott j 2nd Prize; Lamp, presented bf Wingate, Burns <4 Go. Boland, 6yds ... 1 Loomb, Byds .; .. ;; i Ryan, 4yds ... ~ -jj Cameron (ear) also ran. This was a very pretty race, all taking the hurdles well, Boland won rather easily, Byan being a close third, 15. J BATTERY MOUNTING AND Dlfl. MOUNTING GUN COMPETITION— Entrance Is per man. Ist Prize, £8 flsi Gellender’s team won by Xmin 88isee; Miller’s being Irhin 48sec; 16. STANDING HIGH JVMP-Er.tranbe, 2s 6d. Ist Prize, Pair oi Tweed Trousers; presented by J. Bosie 2nd Prigs, Ornamental Pipe; presented by W. Parngll; A. J. Cameron 1 D. Cameron ~ -2 There was one other entry, 17. MILE BACE HANDICAP-Entrance.es. Boland, scratch ~' , i b McLeod had the race well in hand from the start, and won as he liked, A. Oamerob, 15yds; W. Neabitt, 20yds; J. Cainerbn; 20yds; Bolton, Ssyds; aud Hooper, 28yds also ran. 18. THREE-LEGGED BACE—Entrance, 2s. Ist Prize, Bound of Beef, presented by Hatton <S Score, and Dressed Lamb, by J. Clark; 2nd Prize, 2 sacks potatoes, presented by Berry, Daniel <k Co. Armstrong and Skeet ... 1 Adeane and Lewis ~ 2 There were two other entries. Very fast race. 19. OBSTACLE RACE — 440 yards. Entrance. 2s 6d. let Prize, Bridle, presented by W. Adair, and Baddie Cloth, by W. Morgan ; 2nd Prize, Cricket Bat, presented by Nolan & Skeet; 3rd Prize, Christmas Cake, presented by J. Craig. J. Byan ... ,j 1 Loom .. .. .. 9 D. Byan 3 This race proved very amusing to the spectators. Byan won easily.
