Mary Von Sentenced.
LIFE IMPRISONMENT.
SHE THREATENS TO MURDER. Ths following is the account of the sentence of Mrs Mary Von who was charged with the murder of George Wesley Bishop, of Gisborne on the 1st of July last. The account differs somewhat from that published on Saturday but, being later, may be taken as a correct report:—" Before Judge Toohy, at San Francisco. The jury’s verdict was ' We find the defendant guilty of murder in the first degree and fix the penalty at imprisonment for life. We further find a prior conviction proved.' The convicted woman was apparently unmoved by the announcement of the verdict, Tbroughout the trial she was to all appearance perfectly cool. When her fate was announced she showed no surprise or mental excitement. What were her feelings was indicated by a remark she made in the city prison previous to the verdict. She declared she would never suffer imprisonment for life. ' Before I would submit to that,' she said, ' I will kill my cell mate and they would then hang me for murder.’ She was sentenced on October 18th and sent to the States prison for the term of her natural life. She seemed no way concerned, and when the Judge had finished his remarks she said, 'Thank you,' and calmly resumed her seat.”
