WAR OFFICE SCANDAL
GREAT EXCITEMENT. TAMPERING WITH OFFICIAL LETTERS GROSS MISCONDUCT. SEARCHING ENQUIRY ORDERED. London, November 12. In consequence of the accusation against M. Wilson, Secretary in the War Office, of tampering with letters in connection with the late charge against M. Caffarel of selling decorations, the position of M. Grevy is much shaken.
A farther accusation has been preferred against Wilson. He is now accused of abstracting from the police two letters to Madam Simonsen and substituting two others of a less damaging character.
The Chamber of Deputies angrily directed the Government to institute a judicial enquiry. The judicial enquiry demanded by the Chamber of Deputies will involve the searching of Wilson’s papers, President Grevy refuses to dismiss Wilson. This new development has caused a great sensation in Paris.
WILSON PROTESTS HIS INNOCENCE London, Nov. 13.
M. Wilson persists that the letters alleged to have been substituted are authentic, despite the proof that the paper on which they are written was made years subsequent to their date,
