That Noble Blackleg.
CAUSEUF I’ILK SCANDAL. This Jltirewood Viale was run nt the York August Meeting, 25th August Inst, in which the suspicious running of Lord Aylesbury’s colt, Everett, a four year-old, by Pellegrind —Celosia; occurred. Everett started first favourite in a field cf ten at 4 to 1. I erhsps the following description of the race will better explain the cause of the dissatisfaction :—‘ At the distance, Whittington (a 10 to 1,. ehance)drew io the front, nnd nithough Everett appeared to bo winning in a canter, be could do no more than make a dead hint of it. • eciding heat: Everett’, with 6 to 1 on, led throughout and won easily by three-quarters of a length. The riding of E. Martin in the oead heat was considered so suspicions in the decider that Lord Aylesbury and Jtaftih were called before the stewards, and their explanation not being satisfactory, Martin was reported to the stewards of the Jockey Club. A disgraceful scene was witnessed in the paddock when Marfin returned to scale after tho dead heat, the jockey beingmobbed by some of the rougher turfites. There was a good deal of dissatisfaction with the finish, and subsequently both Lord Aylesbury and Martirt were called before a committee of three stewards, and, after a long investigation, these getitlc tnen—Lord Durham, Mr Veyner, and the Hon. W. Filzwilliam—decided to refer the subject to tho stewards of the Jockey Club.’ . A cable message was received last week that Lord Avlesbu’y and his trainer, John lylor, bad been warned off the turf for life, but no mention is made of the jockey, Martin, or the horse Everett being disqualified The Great Eboe Handicap, run at the same mcetingon the previous day, was won by a complete outsider, which turned up in a horse called Silence, 5 years, by Wisdom—Kissing Crust, with 6st 91b up. Be started at 15 to 1 in a field of seven, t e favourite be ing Prince Kudolph, The winner was ridden by the jockey, Calder, who rode Whittington iu his dead heat with Everett.
