Hanlan in Sydney.

KEMP AND NELSON BACKED TO ROW

HANLAN.

Considerable controversy having arisen with regard to Hanlan’s reception, or rather non-reception, which in some indirect way has been attributed to Mr J. G. Deeble, that gentleman, in answer to a query of an Evening News reporter, denied having been in any way a party to any slight to Hanlan. When the steamer by which Hanlan was a passenger was expected, he waited on the wharf from about 8 p.m. on Wednesday till 3 a.m. on Thursday. As there was no appearance of the vessel, he went home. After the vessel’s arrival he, in company with Mr Muir, visited the Zealandia, but Hanlan had gone. The party, then visited Watson’s Hotel, but were informed that Hanlan was not there. Hanlan was at Watson’s Hotel from about 7.30 a.m. on Thursday till 10 a.m., so there must have been some mistake. After driving to Petty’s Hotel, and finding that Hanlan was not there, further search was abandoned. Deeble, Hanlan, and others met at Randwick on Friday, and matters were apparently amicably explained to the ex-champion. On Saturday, Deeble and Hanlan again met, and Deeble taxed Hanlan with having made some statements contrary to fact. This was denied, and Deeble offered to bring proof. The matter was ended by Deeble offering to back Peter Kemp for £5OO to row Hanlan, either before or after Hanlan’s match with Beach. Deeble is also willing to back Chris. Nelson to row Hanlan for £2OO, provided the ex-chnmpiou gives him lOsecs. start.
