GERMANY GIVES WAY.
MURDERED GAMEKEEPER’S WIDOW COMPENSATED.
YOUNG SCHNAEBELLE RELEASED. London; dot. 4,
After a close enquiry into the recent shooting affair on the German and French frontier, in which a lieutenant in the French army and a gamekeeper were shot, the latter being killed and the lieutenant wounded, the Emperor of Germany has been advised to compensate the widow of the gamekeeper. An order has accordingly been made, and regret expressed on the widow’s misfortune. It is not known yet whether any reparation will be made to the officer, but it is believed that he was at fault in disregarding the warning of the sentry. The French are jubilant over the result so far, and it is feared that bitter feeling may again be aroused through some of the papers trying to make a political point out of the incident.
An order has been despatched for the release of M. Schnaebelle, who was arrested some days ago for posting a placard in defiance of the authorities. Before being released he was warned that a repetition of such foolish Conduct in the future would most likely involve him in serious consequences.
