A Diabolical Attempt.
SUPPOSED INTENTION TO BURN A HOUSEHOLD.
The Melbourne Telegraph of a late date says : —“ This morning at a very early hour those living in a house at Preston, occupied by Mr Wm. Lowes, were startled out of their sleep by an alarm of fire. Ten people resided in the house and they all escaped, but it was with some difficulty that one of Mr Lowes's children was rescued. The house had been set fire to at both the front and back, and a large case had been placed in front of the door, as if to bar exit. Watertaps connected with the house hud been plugged up also, which leads to the supposition that a deliberate attempt was made to burn the whole household. The building was a wooden one, and was all consumed except two back rooms. A fortnight previously an attempt had been made to burn down Mr Lowe's house. The detectives have the matter in hand.
