’■ The general opinion, it would appear, in square.circles at Home (says the ateferee) appears io be that HanIsa’s day-is over, but those who put their judgment- against others ini Sic 'matters have 'stated their that.Hanlan is “ laying..back for a brush ”in order-to get good odds over hie routing contest with Beach in ' Australia. Presuming that Hanlan was in good health, and was so easily beaten as stated by Teemer, the writer thinks it would be a question whether he would come out to again measure blades with Beach. John Teemer was a lad of nineteen when he first took up rowing of any importance, and on his first appearance in public in 1888, he put up a record for three miles at the Pullman
(Illinois) regatta on June 29. He shortly after followed this up by lowering the flags of Hamm, Gaudaur, Riley, Plaisted, Hosmer, and Boss, and when 24 he ; did 3 miles in-20min. 1 and a half seconds. He rowed Hanlan itv the championship of America in July, -1885,- and added to his Hat of victories, but he lost the championship to Gaudaur ■ shortly afterwards. His next victory was over Perkins, the English sculler, whom he defeated on August 80, 1886, in the international sculling ■weepstakes on the Thames, and on the following day Neil Matterson went down, before him, but in the final heat of the same sweepstakes on the next day Teemer was defeated by Beach over the championship course.
