Timaru Breakwater.
T»uxu, laet night, v Feeling has got very warm here on the harbour question, there to about £BO,OOO ou hand from the £lOO,OOO harbour loan, and with that it to proposed to [make a work called the north wall. Until thia is made the port will always bo an awkward one to work, owing to the great “Bond” which runs alongside the breastwork. The effect of this send may be judged when it is said that ships ride ao uneasily alongside, that the expenditure on hawsers alone to quite ruinous. The question of going od'With this north wall.eame up at the last Board meeting, and a number ot members who opposed the last loan voted against going on with this nocea-. sary addition to the harbour works ibis year, In case the action for damages brought by the owners of the ship Lyttieton should go against the Board, another £25,000 would have to be raised by rating S this odd £50.000 were expended. The harbour, even now, returns a profit of £5OOO a year, and the matter has resolved itself into a question of town v. country.
