ORIENT BAY.

[To the Editor.] Sib, —Although “ Endeavour ” Bay is not a bad substitute for the much abused “ Poverty" Bay, I would remind the Gisbornites that the name “ Endeavor ” is already tacked on to a Queensland river, just south ofCape Flattery, and to the strait which divides Prince of Wales Island from the York Peninsula, in Queensland. This being the ease, might not confusion occur ? To my mind “ Orient" Bay is far and away the best name for the Bay. It is short, pithy, and in keeping with the eastern coast of the Island. People say it would take a long time before the change were carried into effect, but other places have changed their name and who now thinks of the original one ? For instance, Wanganui was once known as Petre and Patea, on the west coast, as Carlyle. Again, few people know that Wellington Harbour’s correct cognomen is Port Nicholson, but such is the case. Away with "Poverty ’’ Bay, let every merchant and shopkeeper print “ Orient" Bay on their circulars and invoices, their letters and their bills, and “Poverty” Bay will soon be forgotten in the less ugly and far more appropriate “Orient "Bay, —Yours, etc., Atlas.
