[Special to Standard.] OHARITABI-E AID BOARD DEFICIT. THE TREASURER £230 SHORT. PUBLIC MONEY USED FOB PBIVATE PURPOSES. Napier, Last Night. The Charitable Board here have had a difficulty with their accounts. Tbe Chairman and Treasurer, Mr G. L. Margoliouth, used the Board’s funds to the extent of £230 odd in private enterprise of a sort which yielded no.j return whatever. The Audit Office demanded the books. One of the books brought purported to be the cash book, but the Clerk saw it was one made to resemble it. The Treasurer was challenged with fabrication, and next day made a clean breast of it. He admitted taking £2OO for private purposes and had .made up a false book to try and conceal the defalcations. An information was laid and it is understood a warrant was also out, but before it was acted on the defaulter’s wife paid the amount into the bank, and, npon instructions from Wellington, the information was withdrawn. The Treasurer has now left the Colony. The Board met on Monday and found themselves in a quandary. Mr Oimond advised that they should do nothing, but leave it to the Audit Department, At the same time they should ask why the proceedings were withdrawn. It was decided to act accordingly.
