The Queen’s Fund.
A fbewminarv meeting of the women of Gisborne was called for last night at the Courthouse by His Worship the Mayor, to consider a circular from Lady Jervois relative to the establishment of a Queen's Fund for the benefit of women in distress. The following were present:—Mesdames Dunlop, Adair, Andrews, Bousfield, Thompson, and Porter; Misses Porter, Bousfield, Nesbitt and Pearson; Mr Bourke, Town Clerk, and His Worship the Mayor. The Mayor opened the meeting by reading a circular from Lady Jervois and another from Lady Loch, wife of the Governor of Victoria, relative to the formation of a Queen’s Fund throughout the Australasian Colonies for the relief of women in distress. A short discussion ensued, the object of the fund being favorably commented upon by those present, and it was unanimously decided that some steps should be taken in Gisborne to carry out the idea mooted by Lady Jervois. After some desultory conversation on the matter, it was decided that the ladies present should form a Provisional Committee to work up an attendance for a general meeting to be held on the 7th of July next. It was decided that Miss Porter should act as Secretary to the Committee pro tern. A vote of thanks to the Chairman then terminated the proceedings.
