Lecture by Archdeacon Williams.

A most interesting lecture was delivered by the Ven. Archdeacon Williams in the Preibyterian Church on Tuesday evening. The lecture was one of a aeries being given under the auspices of St, Andrew's Literary Society, and the subject of this lecture “A contribution to the early history of Poverty Bay,” was handled by the Archdeacon in a way that showed a very thorough acquaintance with the traditions of the natives and the literature bearing on the subject in hand, The lecturer gave some very interesting facts as allowing that this district held an important position in the early settlement of New of New Zealand by the Maori race, Captain Cook’s visit to Poverty Bay was graphically described, and the features of the Bay and the banks oi the river mentioned in his narrative, were localised by the lecturer. The arrival of the first white man, Mr Harris, and his experiences with the natives formed a most interesting port of the lecture. Altogether this contribution to the history of our district was well worth hearing and was much enjoyed by the large audience. Very hearty thanks, on the motion of Messrs Scott and Ambridge, were tendered to Archdeacon Williams. The ohair was occupied by the President, Rev. Mr McAra, and the Bev. Mr Luxford opened the meeting with prayer.
