Canadian Prime Minister Retires
OTTAWA, Nov. 15. The Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, tendered his resignation to the Governor-General, Viscount Alexander, to-day. Mr Mackenzie King, who is aged 73, has been head of a freely-elected Government longeif than any man in modern history, serving as Prime Minister for 21 years and 157 days, though not continuously. The only competing long-distance record was made by’ Sir Robert Walpole, who was British Prime Minister from 1721 until 1742, which was 158 days shorter than Mr Mackenzie King’s. , , Mr Louis St. Laurent, External Affairs Minister, is expected to signify his intention to form a Government later to-day. He is a French-Canad-ian lawyer. He was appointed External Affairs Minister in 1946 and succeeded Mr Mackenzie King as leader of the Canadian Liberal Party last August.
