(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, Nov. 16 Cricket: St. Mary’s defeated Ruatapu on the first innings by 154 to 80. Ruatapu’s batting start was poor. Jeffcott, one of the tail-enders with the aid of several big hits, made 15, and Leach was not out 28. For St. Mary’s Wallace took 3 for 6, Toohey 4 for 19, Gibson 2 for 18, and Ogilvie 1 foi' 16. L. Wilson and P. Boyd put on 33 for the first wicket for St. Mary’s. Gibson later scored 43 quickly, while Henderson put on 31 in a very short time, other double figure scorers being Wilson (20), Ogilvie (18), Ryan (12). Total 154. For Ruatapu, H. Wilson took 3 for 54, Murphy 5 for 36, Peake 1 for 45, Leach 1 for 3. Ruatapu made 144 for 9 in the second innings, Peake (not out) 58 and Atkinson 47. Wallace took 4 for 31, Gilbert 1 for 22, Gibson 2 for 22, and Boyd 1 for 20, Ogilvie 1 for 4. Ross beat Woodstock on the Ist innings by one run, 130 to 129. For the winners, Philpott scored 46, C. Mitchell 21, not out, J. Denia (13), J. Puketapu (12), and R. Davis (12). E. Stoop took 7 wickets for 41 runs, W. Growcott, two for 24, and K. Ward, one for 1. R. Wells 30, A. Howat,2B, L. Wells 22 W. Growcott 19, and K. Ward 16, batted well for W’oodstock. For Ross G. Forrest took three for 27, and J. Puketapu, three f or 28. Ross played on until call of time and at stumps had lost two wickets for 57 (J. Denia 30, and E. Mitchell 12, not out). Hokitika beat Kumara by an innings and 79 runs, scoring 223 for no wickets. Of these R. Cook made 156, land M. Baird 56. Kumara made 61 and 83. McKenzie made 16 and M. Kirwan and Webster 41, Hokitika women’s team beat Blackball by 18 runs on the rst innings, scoring 81 to 63. For the winners, J. Gillman made 18, L. Clausen 13, L. Stapleton 14 and J. McLean 11. For Blackball the best scorers were H. Mountford 18, D. McNaughton 13 and N. Mountford 12. Hokitika’s best bowlers were Clausen, four for 9; Gillman, three for 19. For Blackball, H. Mountford took two for 30, S. Mountford, four for 16 and T. Smith, one for 5. Westland Racing Club Mr M. H. Houston presided at the meeting of the Westland Racing Club on Monday evening. The following tenders were accepted.—Publican’s booth, G. Elley (Ross); ice cream, J. D. Ryan (Hokitika). The application of Mr L. F. Hogg to be a licensed judge was approved. Mr A. R. Ellis was nominated as totalisator inspector and Mr G. Reed was appointed starter. Mr L. A. Butterfield is to be □ tipendary steward lor the trotting events. The Racing Conference advised of a meeting to be held on January 10 to uiscuss amendments to rules. Mr W. Stopiorth repox ted for the course committee that Mr Conza hau removed the tree from the main entrance, and also cleared the drainage system. The pavilion was being painted, the posts and rail around the crack had been repaired and the track mowed closely with mowers, f'he track would be m excellent ordex xur the meeting on December 18. The following officials were approved: Ratebook stewards, W. Ellis and F. Groufsky; gate stewards, W. jamieson and L. J. Salvingy; clerk or scales, E. Rankin; birdcage stewards, -u. Neilsen and R. Whiiey; place stewards, H. Kortegast, H. Wells, W. Stopxortn and, J. Bennett; timekeepers, H. wells and J. Bennett; car park stewards, D. Frielander and J. Macfarlane; afternoon tea stewards, D. Sullivan, T. Staines and W. Stopforth; starting place steward, E. W. Heenan. The secretary is to endeavour to secure suitable men for the blackboard and main notice board. The heaa gateman will be Mr E. W. Breeze. A long discussion took place on necessary improvements for the service in the tea rooms, and the stewards in charge were empowered to discuss with the manageress the varans means of improving the service to patrons. A working bee oi mem oers will be held at the racecourse this week-end to continue painting and repair work. west coasters will follow the race meeting at Christchurch this weekend with more than usual interest, aTop Deck a locally-owned three-year-old will be contesting the Stewards Handicap, one of the main events on the programme. Top Deck, by Top Row from Mauretania is one of th. leading three-year-olds in the Dominoii. and is owned by the oopular West Coast sportsmen, Messrs F. Freitas, Ox Greymouth, and M. H. Houston, snr. or Hokitika. They will also have a half-sister to Top Deck in Caronia racing. A two-year-old, Caronia is from Mauretania also. Just three weeks ago. Mauretania delivered a colt foal by Royal Chief and it is reported to be a beautiful colt. The turn of fortunes wheel has been a long time coming the local owners’ way, and their success to-day is a matter of enjoyment to all lovers of racing. Caronia will start in the Welcome Stakes. Mrs Freitas, wife of the part owner of Top Deck and Caronia owns the well-known Palomino, and the return to form of this
good performer is pleasing news. Palomino should also race well at Riccarton. Top Deck and Caronia are trained by Mr A. McMullan and his son. Alex McMullan is well known on the West Coast where he trained for some seasons. Palomino is trained by the Riccarton mentor, R. Wilson.
