A fine of £3 with 10s costs was imposed on Alex James Scalmer, 20, miner, of Pitt Street Cobden, by Messrs E. O. Henry and W. H. J. Watson, J’s.P.'. in the Greymouth Police Court yesterday, for using obscene language. On a charge of drunkenness, Scalmer was convicted and discharged.

Pleading guilty to a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker, Victor Trumper Dempster, was fined £75 by Justices in the Magistrate’s Court at Invercargill yesterday.—P.A.

Sunday was the warmest day experienced in Greymouth this summer, when a maximum temperature of 65.3 degrees was .recorded. The average maximum temperatures this month have been over 60 degrees, with the lowest only 58.3 degrees which was recorded on November 15.

To-night, Mr H. S. K. Kent, tutor in Adult Education for Canterbury University College will address members of the Mothers’ Club and all others interested at the Lyceum Hall. Many organisations are interested in furthering adult educational and cultural activities within their areas. The adult educational section of the Canterbury University College is helping in every way by providing tutors; lectures with moving pictures; and specially designed courses in art, drama and musical appreciation.
