HOWE FIFTH IN WILLIAMSTOWN CUP

Rank Outsider,. Gayness JjVins (Rec. 7.30) MELBOURNE, Nov. 14. After a series of mishaps in the Williamstown Cup, at Flemington, the heavily backed favourite Howe, could not do better than fifth. He was lame when pulled up, but his jockey, Harold Badger, said that despite this, he might have won if favoured with any luck in the running. While Howe and other favoured horses were hemmed in, the rank outsider, Gayness, wently strongly to the winning post to beat Anthelion and Red Fury. Gayness was ridden by L. Lott, who has been in India for 14 years, where he rode over 250 winners. Harold Badger, acknowledged as one of the greatest jockeys Australia has produced in the last 25 years, was having his last day’s racing. He is aged 41, and has ridden winners in almost every Australian race of note, except the Melbourne Cup. He said that the finest horse he ever rode was Ajax. The Williamstown Cup field was led most of the way by Westralian. Gayness followed hotly and took over at the top of the straight to come in without any serious challenge. Result: Gayness 7.10 (Lott) 1; Anthelion 7.13 (Williamson) 2; Red Fury 8.2 (Heather) 3. Twelve started. Won by IS lengths; threequarters of a length. Time 2.45.
