U.S.A. NOT LENDING TO SPAIN FOR INDUSTRIAL RECOVERY
WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 Government officials said to-day that Spain stands little or no chance at present of getting either a Government or private loan from the United States. They were discussing a Madrid report that General Franco wants a 200,000,000-dollar loan to buy industrial and transportation equipment. The chief foreign correspondent of the New York Times (C. L. Sulzberger'; reports from Madrid that General Franco told him that Spain hoped for a loan of 200,000,000 dollars from the United States, but did not want, to participate in the European Recovery Programme “because of opposition from political groups within the Government of the Marshall Plan nations.” General Franco considered that Spain was automatically included in Western European matters and was willing to take part in the Western Union alliance. “Nations bordering on the same seas and oceans should strengthen their relationships,” General Franco said. Militant Duchess in Spanish Prison (Rec. 10.40) MADRID, Nov. 14 The Duchess of Valencia, who is a militant Spanish Monarchist, has been on parole from prison, and stayed at her home because of illness. She nas been returned to the Venias women Sj prison by the police. The Duchess had been fined £25,000 for her Political offences. She was gaoled six months ago for her distribution of clandes tine propaganda against General Franco’s Government. It is that her return to gaol actually has resulted from her participation in a demonstration that was made at the funeral of a Monarchist youth, who had been reported to have died m the gaol. i
