First Day’s Success Hastens Chinese Army NANKING, November 13. Chinese Nationalist armies on Friday finished all Communist hopes of blasting the road to Nanking in the near future with a smashing victory on the Grand Canal front, east of Hsuchow, where they routed eignt crack armies totalling 160,000 men after a thirty-six hours’ battle.. The .victory ended the first round of the Battle of Hsuchow in favour of the Nationalist forces, who gained a much needed breathing space. According to Chinese newspaper reports, the Communists left 10,000 dead on the battlefield, and 4000 have been captured. The Chinese reports claimed that the Communists broke their ranks and 'fled northwards in disorder. The Nationalist Air Force played a big part in the victory. . News of this success haa an electrifying effect on the Government forces north of Hsuchow, who on Friday counter-attacked, regainingtwo towns twenty miles north of the city. Reports from Tientsin state that some 30,000 Nationalist troops evacuated from West Manchuria have i arrived in Tientsin after an arduous journey during which they travelled as best they could' by train and cart and on foot, many going without food for several days. United States consular officials last night urged Americans in Tsingtao to leave immediately “unless they have some compelling reason to remain”. Tsingtao is an American fleet anchorage, and has hitherto been regarded as the safest place in China. CHINESE CURRENCY DEVALUED The Chinese Government last night officially devalued the gold yuan, and fixed its value at twenty gold yuan to one United States dollar. London bankers who z have branches in China believe that the currency conditions there have become completely chaotic, states Reuter’s financial correspondent. The depreciation of the Chinese currency has gone as far as to wipe out the, banks’ assets and liabilities. They thus regard themselves as having no local currency, assets or liabilities in China.
