Brewer’s Opinion of Licensing Bill

AUCKLAND, Nov. 12. “On the surface the Bill appears to be a constructive approach to what is a complex and difficult problem,” said Mr H. J. Kelliher, managing director of Dominion Breweries, Ltd., commenting on the Licensing Amendment Bill. “A start has to be made somewhere, and it seems that the Government is making a genuine attempt.” Mr Kelliher said that the matter of hotel tenure between polls appeared to have been overlooked. If a license was expected to remodel and reconstruct his building then nine years between the polls would be more reasonable time than the three now proposed. “The subject is highly controversial,” continued Mr Kelliher, “but the trade would welcome any commonsense and practical proposals for the benefit of the general public and designed to meet modern requirements.,” SITTINGS OPEN TO THE PRESS WELLINGTON, Nov. 11.
