New Agreement in N.Z. Printing and Newspaper Trade

p.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 12 An agreement upon the terms of a new award for the printing and newspaper industries was concluded by the Conciliation Council to-day. The Conciliation Commissioner was £• Ritchie, and the advocates, Messrs E. W. Clarkson (for the employers) and R. S. Thomas (for the union). Wages were fixed at £7 bs 8d pei week for compositors and £7 13s 4 a per week for linotype op ® ra t°^ s * Yhp r corresponding adjustments for other classes of workers. , , The overtime clause was amended to provide for payment at time-and-a-half for the first three hours on any day, instead of four hours as in the current award, and four hours at time-and-a-half on Saturday. Detailed provisions were settled tor extra payments to newspaper workers employed on Saturdays and Sundays. This part of the agreement will come into operation on November 15, and the agreement in regard to wages on November 22. A number of amendment™ will come into force when the agreement is ratified by the Arbitration Court.
