WHITE AUSTRALIA RULE AGAINST ASIATICS
CANBERRA, November 10. The Australian diplomatic authority in Ceylon, which had issued landing permits to migrants who were 75 per cent. Asiatic, had had its authority withdrawn, said the Australian Minister of Immigration (Mr A. A. Calwell) in the House of Representatives. The Australian immigration laws laid down that landing permits could be issued only to persons of substantially European origin. The authority in Ceylon had not been very careful in the matter. People who did not come within the scope of the law had been sent back. Mr J. T. Lang claimed that a former organising secretary of the Labour Party in New South Wales had received £4OOO in fees from Indian migrants, although he was unable to provide berths for them. Mr Calwell said he had told the agent that he did not approve of the fees he was charging intending migrants. After this he (Mr Calwell) himself had brought down legislation controlling the fees charged by agents, and enabling the Government to order a refund of part of the fees.
