N.Z. Road Traffic Deaths Now 166 for Year
WELLINGTON, Nov. 9. “One hundred and sixty-six people have died in traffic accidents so far this year,” said the Minister of Transport, the Hon. F. Hackett, today. Eleven people were killed in road accidents in October. “An outstanding feature of the October accidents was three levelcrossing fatalities,” said the Minister, adding that three motor-cyclists and one pillion rider had been killed during the month. “I know that to the motor-cyclist there is probably no greater thrill than the feel of a powerful machine, but in foolish or incapable hands it becomes an instrument of death,” he said. “The motor-cyclist has no protection in an accident. He owes it to himself to be careful and alert at all times, to avoid the serious consequences which usually follow an accident.”
