JAP PEARLS FOUND IN RAIDS ON THE WESTRALIA
AUCKLAND, Oct. 13. Hundreds of strings of Japanese pearls were confiscated by customs officials on the waterfront to-day as Australian soldiers and members of the troopship Westralia’s crew tried to smuggle them ashore. It was the biggest customs raid in Auckland for a long time. Officials were reticent to discuss the raid, but admitted that a “number of men” had been searched. In several cases the offenders were summarily fined. There will be no court proceedings. “We have got a small mountain of things,” said one official, referring to this and previous hauls.
