Soviet Not Keen on Reference to “Image of God”
(Rec. 11.30) LONDON, Oct. 12 The Soviet Union made a “friendly protest” against including in the United Nations’ declaration of Human Rights, a proposition that “men are created in the image and likeness of God,” says Reuter’s Paris correspondent. Professor Alexei Pavlov, the Soviet delegate, told the Social Committee of the General Assembly: "In my country the postulate that man is created in the image of God, is much disputed, and sometimes even regarded as reflecting certain special backwardness.” Professor Pavlov also opposed the opening paragraph of the proposed declaration which enunciates: “All human beings are born free and equal in their dignity and rights.” He said: “Freedom and equality in rights are not inherent by birth, but are the product of the socia l structure.”
