GOLF HOKITIKA PLAYER BEATEN AT N.Z. WOMEN’S TOURNEY

P.A. PALMERSTON NORTH, Oct. 11. There were cloudy, but cool conditions when the New Zealand women s golf championships were continued this morning. There was a complete absence, of wind. Out in 37—one over par, Miss H. Buchanan (Christchurch) carried too many guns for Miss J. Duncan (Wanganui), whom she beat at the lath. The Canterbury player started well, taking the first hole in four to six. The second was halved in regulation fours, and at the third Miss Buchanan went further ahead when she scored a birdie to her opponent’s four. The fourth, fifth, and sixth were halved in regulation figures. At the seventh Miss Duncan stymied herself, and lost the hole. The eighth was halved in fours, and at the ninth Miss Duncan laid a stymie on Miss Buchanan when the latter’s ball was only about 15 feet from the hole. Instead of going for a win by chipping her ball over the other, Miss Buchanan was content to halve the hole fours. Miss Duncan won the 10th in four to five, only to lose the 11th and 12th, where her opponent carded bogey figures. The long 13th went to the Wanganui player in five to six; the next was halved in fives, and at the 15th, a four gave Miss Buchanan a win and the match. TITLE HOLDER’S WIN The present holder of the title, Miss E. Wilkinson (Grange) was all square with Miss N. Beverley (Matamata) at the conclusion of the outward half, but, coming home, Miss Wilkinson was too steady for her opponent. Two bogeys, at the first and second, gave the title-holder wins, but Miss Beverley, after halving the third in indifferent sixes, scored a birdie at the short four, to give her a win. The fifth was halved in sixes, and at the sixth a win went to the Matamata player, when she gained a bogey to her opponent’s six. Miss Wilkinson took the seventh in a five to six, but lost the short eighth when she took a four to Miss Beverley’s three. The ninth was halved in threes, and the tenth was halved in fours, but Miss Wilkinson then scored two bogeys at the next two holes to register wins. The thirteenth was halved in sixes, and at the fourteenth Miss Wilkinson scored another win to be three up with five. She lost the 15th in six to four, but five at the 16th gave her a win and the match. STEADY PLAYER

Playing steady golf, Mrs H. Murray (Miramar) accounted for Mrs F. W. Cresswell (Miramar) 6 and 4. Mrs Murray lost the first hole in a five to' a four, but- at the second reversed the scores to square the game. The third was halved in fours, and at the fourth, a three gave Mrs Murray a win. The fifth was halved in sixes, and at the sixth and seventh a birdie and a bogey registered wins for Mrs Murray. The eighth was halved in fours, and at the last hole on the outward journey Mrs Murray became four up with three. The 10th was halved in fours, but Mrs Murray lost the 11th when she took five to her opponent’s four. Wins at x.he next three holes in par figures gave Mrs Murray the match. HOKITIKA PLAYER Mrs J. Ball (Wanganui) had an easy win against Mrs B. E. Andrews (Hokitika) finishing the match on the 13th. The first hole was halved in fours, and at the next Mrs Ball scored a win in live to six. The third and were halved in par figures. The next four holes went to Mrs Ball. A four cost her a loss at the short ninth, where her opponent was out in three. Mrs Ball was out in 39 against hoi’ partner’s 44. The 10th was halved in regulation fours, and Mrs Ball went further ahead when she won the 11th. The 12th was halved in threes, and a bogey five at the long 13th gave Mrs Ball a win and the match. Inconsistent putting characterised the match between Mrs C. W. Jacobsen (Auckland) and Miss K. Rutherford (Christchurch). Mrs Jacobsen, who plays on a handicap of 11, is one of the most improved players in the tournament, and did well to' win at the 20th. Miss Rutherford was two up at the turn, after an indifferent outward journey. Mrs Jacobsen gained the lead, however, with wins at the 10th, 12th and 13th. The next four were halved out. At the 18th Miss Rutherford sank a 35-foot putt for a win. At the 19th Miss Rutherford missed a two-foot putt, and at the 20th she over-ran the green. Mrs Jacobsen was down in four to give her a win.

Mrs R. E. Hutchinson (Poverty Bay) made a determined bid to overtake her opponent, Mrs R. S. Fuller-ton-Smith (.Marton) who was four up at the turn. After the 16th hole, Mrs Fullerton-Smith was only one down, but she won the 17th to take the match two and one. TO THE 20TH HOLE In a game of fluctuating fortunes, Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi), three times the New Zealand singles champion, was taken to the 20th hole by a fellow-Aucklander, Miss R. C. Hodges. Miss Hodges squared the match at the 18th with a brilliant birdie three. She halved the 19th, and then ran into trouble at the 20th, finally conceding the hole and the match. Results:—
