SHARK LANDS IN ROWING BOAT NEAR SYDNEY
(Rec. 9.0). SYDNEY, October 11. After a big thresher shark had flung itself into a rowing boat off Avoca Beach, 50 miles north of Sydney, one man swam three miles to the shore, while two companions spent over six hours in the waterlogged craft. The men were rowing to Avoca after a fishing trip, when the shark attacked the boat. The shark first attempted to bite a hole in the craft. Then the bow was dragged down and the fish came aboard. The men dived overboard, and, by tipping the boat on one side, gave the shark its chance to escape. Within a minute, the shark was in itsmative element again, and the men were back in thS boat, but the craft was almost swamped, and the oars were gone. Using a raft, fashioned from the floor-boards, a man swam two miles towards the coast. Abandoning the raft, he was swept another mile by the currents, and thrown on to the rocks. The other men were rescued by a surf boat. It is believed that the thresher shark mistook the boat for a whale.
