RUGBY FOOTBALL Springbok Trial Matches and Itinerary of All Blacks
(Rec. 8.40). LONDON, Oct. 9. Reuter’s correspondent at CapeTown, says:—The South African Rugby Board has adopted a revised itinerary for the All Black Rugby tour. It is one providing for twentythree matches, including four Tests. The itinerary extends _ from Apri. 23, 1949, with a match againht Natal at Durban; until August 6. 1949, with a match versus South Africa, al Durban. The Springboks’ trial matches wili be staged in Pretoria from Apr'l 30 to Mav 7. The navies of the player/ to be invited to participate will b? announced at the end of November, or early December. WIN FOR AUCKLAND AUCKLAND, October 10.
In a match with the team called the Barbarians, Auckland won by 27 to 13. The Barbarian back line included: Fullback, J. Taylor; threequarters, P. Henderson, Johnny Smith, M. P. Goddard; live-eighths, K. Gudsell, J. Kearney; half-back, P. Tezlaff. , , Early attacks by Barbarians had Auckland troubled, but the home forwards covered well, and in turn broke through to go close to scoring. Scott missed a long penalty, the ball hitting the upright. McLean outpaced Henderson to score in the corner from the rebound. Scott's kick missed. Kearney equalised the score when he drop-kicked a goal fretn a handy position from loose play. Smith and Kearney combined effectively for Ensor to score. Kearney converted, to make the score 8-3 in Barbarians favour McLean scored his second try for Auckland. Scott joined in to ’rake an overlap, and enable McLean to beat Henderson. Scott again missed. Half-time score: Barbarians 8, Auckland 6. Auckland recaptured the lead alter splendid play in the loose, McLean scoring his third try. Auckland forwards were now calling the tune, and two more converted tries were scored, by Black and Burke. Scott kicked a °’reat penalty. A classic movement by the Auckland backs brought yet another try for McLean, and clever play by Black and Allen brought a further try. Scott’s conversion made Auckland 19 points ahead. A great try for Barbarians by Andrews brought the game to an end. Kearney converted.
