Thirty Thousand Dollars for N.Z. Seaman from ’Frisco Raffle

(Rec. 5?30) SAN FRANCISCO, October 8. Roy Reid, aged 41 years, a seaman, of Auckland, New Zealand, arrived here to-day, and he collected 30,000 dollars, which he won in a raffle. The raffle was drawn while he was on the high seas. He bought his ticket on his previous visit to San Francisco. The prize for the winner was a furnished house, which Reid turned down. He instructed a bank to sell the house for cash, and to hold the proceeds until his return. Reid said that he has no intention of settling down or of giving up sea going. His only worry, he said, was that the .authorities might take a big ‘bite” in taxation, but the bank officials believe that his winnings are not taxable, as Reid is only a transient.
