Rongotai a Vital N.Z. Air Link

NELSON, October 7. It was no secret that an international airport could not be built at Rongotai and probably not at Paraparumu either, said Sir Frederick Tymms, the leader of the air mission inquiring into civil aviation in New Zealand. Asked if he had yet been able to assess Rongotai’s importance as a focal point in New Zealand’s internal air services, Sir Frederick said everyone would agree it was a most vital link in the communications system. He had no doubt that it would be put into suitable condition for internal services.

He outlined the conditions required for international airports. One was an area of land with a two and a-half mile radius in which there was no obstacle higher than 50ft. “From what I have heard, I am quite prepared to believe that Nelson wants an international airport, but I do not think that it needs one”, Sir Frederick said.
