SOCCER Visit of Denniston Team

A match between a team from Denniston and a Greymouth combination at Victoria Park was productive last Saturday of some good play and although the visitors lost by six goals to two, the score did not indicate the merits of the teams.

The teams were: — Greymouth.—Dixon, Stone, McNeish, Griffin, McDonald, Dando, Boyd, Hawkins, Newton. Dennihton.— Birmingham, Coates, Watson, Meek, McNaught. D’Ath, Cockfield, Kirk, Clark., Cotter, Blake. Play from the start was fast, the ball travelling well into each half. It was not till well on in the first spell that McNaught scored a perfect goal with a shot that left the goalie well on the wrong side of his goal. Being one down, Grey made determined efforts, winch brought results, Boyd finding the net with a very nice shot. What ’should be termed as the best goal of the day, came from Dando, who put the ball in the goal with an express shot which did not rise above six inches from the ground, _and Blake, the Denniston goalie, haa no chance at all. Half-time came with the score 2-1 in Greymouth’s favour. After the interval the pace was still fast with Grey having slightly the better of the game. The Denniston forward line were doing all that was asked of them, but were not helped to any great extent by their defence, a weakness, which if rectified, would make Denniston one of the hardest teams to beat in the South Island. The Gxey forwards were on top of the opposing defence all the time, resulting in Boyd getting another goal. Towards the end both sides were tiring and the finish came with Greymouth the Winners _bv 6 goals to 2. For Greymouth it would be hard to pick out individuals, as the team played well throughout. Praise should go to the defence as during the first half they had a strong wind to contend with. Of the visitors the pick of the team would be McNaught, Watson who scored their second goal, Coates and Birmingham. Cockfield, at centre-half, played quite a good game, and as it is his first season in soccer, better things should be heard of him. Blake in goal had a great deal to do, and those balls that did get past were quite out of his reach. Summing up the match, a score of 3-2 in favour of Grev, would have been a good indication.

Preceding the senior match Denniston boys played Greymouth and the visiters won by the odd goal in three. On Sunday a friendly match was played between Blackball and Denniston, Blackball winning by 2 to 1-
