The death occurred yesterday of one of Westport’s most esteemed residents, Mr James William Bird. Aged 69 years, he was a native of lasmania. He came to this country 4o years ago. He worked as a bushman for some time, and was for a long period on the Westport waterfront. He took a particularly keen interest in Salvation Army work, and was one of the prominent members of the local Corps, and was an enthusiastic bandsman. He leaves besides his wife, four daughters, Mesdames Jackson (Timaru), and Thomas (Ashburton), Sister D. Bird (Buller Hospital), and Miss Joyce Bird (Westport), also one son, Mr James Bird, of Christchurch. Airways passengers at Westport yesterday were: From Wellington, Miss Coleman, Mr A. Swainson, Mr Askew, Mr Thomas, Mr Henderson; from Nelson, Mr T. E.. Maunsell; for Nelson, Mr Douglas, Mr B. H. Woods, Mr J. Sinclair, Mr Woodhouse; for Wellington, Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, Mrs Scoltock, Miss M. McNamara, Miss N. Reedy, Mr V. P. Haughton, Mr Bennett, Mr S. F. Kerr; for Auckland, Mr B. D. Anderson. Mr W. F. Cook, of Inangahua Junction, was a visitor to’ Westport on Monday for Mr A. D. Patterson’s funeral. Mrs L. Gilsennon, of Inangahua Landing, was a visitor to Westport yesterday.
