Runanga Combined Schools’ Ball

On Friday night last, the event of the year, so far as Runanga is concerned,- took place in the Miners’ Hall on the occasion of the annual Schools Ball. The popularity of this ball was proved by the crowded attendance and the fancy dress costumes compared favourably with pre-war standards, setting a difficult task for the judges. A new departure was made this year, in that, instead of having oldtime dancing for the whole programme, some folk dancing was introduced by the school children and provided a very colourful scene. The highlight of the evening was an exhibition of dancing by the senior girls of the State School, dressed in their basketball uniforms. Many attractive and original costumes were displayed in the Grand March and nobody envied the judges, M-r and Mrs L. B. Galbraith, of Greymouth, for the job they had in hand. The following prizes were awarded. —Best dressed girl (Cow Girl), Alwyn Robin; best dressed boy (Rajah), Allan Hall; best dressed girl, special class (Spanish Lady) Lorna Scullion); best dressed boy special class (3YZ) Bryan Freeman; most original girl (McLean’s Toothpaste) Frances Thomas; most original boy (Housing Problem) Billy Scurr; cheapest costume, girl (Handkerchief Girl) Evelyn Dalzell); cheapest costume, boy (Apple a Day) James Symonds; fancy costume under five, girl (Night) Judith McKane; fancy costume under five, boy (Ride a Cock-Horse) Barry Campbell; tiny tots, girls (Gay Nineties) Linette Boote; tiny tots, boys (Superman) Ray Kennedy; youngest in the Grand March, girl Veronica Hearne (14months); youngest boy in the Grand March, Mauveen Kennedy (eighteen months); best pair (Old English Couple) Irene and Valerie James); judges’ prizes, girl (Rainbow) Gwen Mintoff; boy, (Abo.) Terry Patterson. ~ , The Black and White Orchestra provided the music for the evening. An adult dance finished off an evening which, financially, constituted an all-time record.
